The Schedule R credit is a nonrefundable federal tax credit designed to reduce tax liability dollar-for-dollar—ranging between $3,750 and $7,500 depending on your filing status and income.

Who Qualifies?

To claim this credit based on disability, you must meet three core IRS criteria:

  1. Permanent and Total Disability: A licensed physician must certify that a physical or mental impairment prevents "substantial gainful activity" and is expected to last continuously for at least 12 months or result in death.

  2. Taxable Disability Income: You must be retired on disability and receiving taxable disability payments from an employer’s plan.

  3. Age Requirement: You must not have reached your employer's mandatory retirement age by the beginning of the tax year.

Income Considerations

Because this credit is targeted toward lower-to-moderate-income households, strict Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) and non-taxable pension limits apply. For single filers, AGI must generally be under $17,500, while married couples filing jointly (where both qualify) have an AGI limit of $25,000.

How We Help

Claiming Schedule R requires a valid, signed Physician’s Statement on file and accurate completion of IRS Schedule 3. If you aren't sure whether your disability benefits qualify as taxable income, our team specializes in reviewing benefit statements to ensure you never leave money on the table.
